Big Tech Forgot the Humans
AI leaders from Mrinank Sharma to Dex-Hunter-Torricke are sending us uncanningly similar messages of impending, unavoidable doom as they exit stage left and leave the industry.
“We are entering the most disruptive moment in human history… sleepwalking into disaster.“
The question is not “Does AI have the potential to dramatically change the landscape of work and life?” It abso-freaking lutely does and is. The question is “What will we allow AI to change and why? “
The doom world we’re being warned about will only happen if it’s driven by human choices.
This critical human truth is the very one these doom narratives are omitting. And, because of this omission, our mindsets are gradually slipping into a state of paralysis that says we are powerless—that we lack the ability, capacity, or sovereignty to shape our future and define our place in this brave new world.
The Missing Human Element
It’s not just Big Tech leaders who are failing to integrate this human truth into the AI-era narrative. The mainstream media is right there with them, giving us every reason to believe the ship has sailed—that we humans are royally screwed— destined to drool on ourselves and apathetically collect universal welfare as we’re replaced by the machine.
These narratives rely on the false assumption that we no longer have agency— that we are helpless, hopeless sitting ducks at the mercy of Big Tech and AI to determine our fate.
cog·ni·tive: /ˈkäɡnədiv/ (adj.) Relating to the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
sov·er·eign·ty: /ˈsävrən(t)ē,ˈsävərən(t)ē,ˈsävərn(t)ē/ (n.) Supreme power or authority.
The crucial human element that totally debunks this assumption is cognitive sovereignty— our individual and collective human ability to think and actively choose how, when, where, and why we adopt AI.
Our sovereignty applies to every choice we make— from leveraging AI to find a cure for cancer to replacing human jobs and choosing whether or not we use AI as a weapon of mass-destruction.
Remember: Every single change that we are experiencing right now, whether it’s a triumph or a shit show, is the result of people making choices- exercising their cognitive sovereignty.
If we don’t like what we see and where we’re heading, we have the power to change it. If we love the gains we’re realizing and we want more, we can influence that too.
If you look closely at the most monumental human challenges we’ve ever faced, from building civilzations to landing on the moon, you will see clear evidence of humans exercising cognitive sovereignty.
History has taught us this: As long as we have the power to think for ourselves, we have the power to choose our reality and define our future.
What Is Cognitive Sovereignty?
Cognitive sovereignty is our human ability to think autonomously and our power to choose how we shape the future and define our role within it. Barring conditions that impair cognitive ability, we are all cognitively sovereign.
I want to be very clear about something.
We can use this ability to fuel our impending doom. We can use it to lead us to a future where AI helps us achieve revolutionary level human good. Cognitive sovereignty makes both of those statements equally true.
Today, Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, is showing us what cognitive sovereignty looks like, in real-time. Despite threats and pressure from the Pentagon to remove Claude’s safeguards, this leader is exercising his power to think and to choose—independent of any algorithmic influence.
Three Sovereign Pillars
PILLAR 1: Critical Thinking
Our God given human ability to think autonomously: curiously, creatively, logically, objectively. This quality of thinking instigates questions that spark meaningful conversation- to exercise discernment and sense-making that lead us to ideas, solutions, and innovation.
PILLAR 2: Emotional Intelligence
Our intuitive sense-making. Trusting our minds and ourselves more than we trust any algorithm. Our capacity for mindful awareness, empathy, and diplomacy—all essential in developing trusted, meaningful, human connections.
PILLAR 3: Emotional Regulation
Our ability to direct our mind and regulate our nervous system—to reset from crisis induced reactivity into confident, mindful response. Our ability to navigate life with clarity, psychological safety, and make sound decisions; to communicate and collaborate powerfully, especially in the midst of conflict, fear, and uncertainty.
This level of cognitive sovereignty activates our personal and collective agency— our ability to define our reality and our future.
Bridging the Divide to Exercise Cognitive Sovereignty
Achieving revolutionary level human good will only be possible if we prioritize and develop cognitive sovereignty. We have a significant divide to bridge. Ever since IBM released the first smartphone in 1994 we’ve gotten cognitively lazy—over-relying on technology that slowly dumbs down our abilities and surrenders more of our sovereignty to Big Tech.
Life In 2026
- We used to remember phone numbers of our friends and family members and dial them. Today, we rely on our “personal tracking devices” to remember those numbers and call the people we love.
- We used to solve basic math in our minds. Today, we rely on our calculators.
- We used to read maps and use nature to determine our orientation. Today, we rely on GPS to tell us where to go and which direction we’re heading.
- We used to manage our calendars. Today, we rely on apps to orchestrate our hours.
- We used to listen to our bodies. Today, we rely on technology to tell us when to sleep, take a break, stand, and move.
- We used to think and wonder when we didn’t know the answer. Today, we look up the answers on our phones—dangerously mistaking information for knowledge.
We rely on Smart Compose to sanitize our communication and shape our ideas. We rely on social media feeds and click bait headlines and call them news. We rely on algorithms to tell us who to love, and AI chatbots to do our research, craft our emails, and plan our trips.
As we’ve become over-reliant on technology, we’ve removed the friction that creates the cognitive load we need to truly learn, aquire knowledge, and make sovereign decisions.
We’ve traded our human power for productivity, efficiency, and perfection. But, here’s what I want you to know. It’s not too late to reclaim the power we’ve willingly given away. We can start right here, right now.
Getting Real to Reclaim Sovereignty.
We have to slwo down, take a step back, and get real about where we are and how we got here. AI didn’t just happen. Human beings made active choices and created it.
As we look at the disruption AI is causing in our workplaces, lives, and societies, we have to acknowledge the human why:
- “Can AI” is guiding decisioning
- Greed fails to consider the human cost
- We’re figuring this out in real-time
Closing the gaps between apathy and intention and between “can” and “should” is a damn good place to start. This, is where our sovereignty lives.
Stop asking “Can AI.” Start asking “Should we allow AI?”
Beyond this, are a handful of fundamental sovereign questions every tech leader, government leader, parent, creator, educator, and society needs to ask before turning another human task or opportunity over to AI:
- What do we value as humans?
- What future do we want to create?
- What can we gain by saying yes? What are we trading?
- What’s the cost of saying yes? Of saying no?
- Who and how many benefit from the decision? Who and how many could be harmed?
Defining the Era
Yes, we are living in unprecedented times. AI is the most powerful technology that’s ever existed. And, it’s eclipsed the understanding of the human minds that developed it.
This truth creates an even bigger, more immediate call for cognitive sovereignty.
The history making narrative that is far more significant relies on us. It’s the one determined by the series of human choices you and I have the power to make today that will become the story we tell generations tomorrow.
It is the narrative of our power to shape the future and define our place in it.
And as we make choices, we will have to adapt. Adaptability is a simple fact of this life that is changing every single day, regardless of AI. Adapting has been and always will be essential to our mindset, prosperity, and survival.
Adapting to AI without sovereignty is a slow surrender.
It will be a voluntary guaranteed decline into the 2006 Idiocracy reality which reminds us of this: “Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence.”
Defining Our Future
AI has the potential to help us realize immeasurable human gains from curing cancer and eliminating food deserts to preserving this planet that we call home. It also has the potential to lead us to unimaginable disaster.
Exercising our cognitive sovereignty means we have to dedicate time and importance to mindfully answering three fundamental questions:
- What do we value as humans?
- What future do we want to create?
- What choices do we need to actively make now to make it real?
We Have the Power to Write the Narrative
Big Tech wants us to believe that we are paralyzed and helpless.
I’m asking you to remember that we are sovereign—armed with uniquely human abilities and brains far more powerful than any algorithm.
Prioritize your cognitive sovereignty. Reclaim it. Develop it. Exercise it.
Reject the fear.
Reject the belief that you are no longer needed or relevant.
Remember: As long as we have the power to think for ourselves, we have the power to choose our reality and define our future.
Three Sovereign Human Choices
Decrease your reliance. Strengthen the human skills that preserve and expand your cognitive ability: critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and emotional regulation. Rely on your own mind 10% more every day by doing the work instead of hitting the easy button. If the internet went down today, how would you accomplish the daily tasks that you’ve been turning over to technology?
Re-evaluate your human value. Get clear about the traits and abilities that make you uniquely human. What have you been overlooking? How has technology been dampening those traits and abilities? What beliefs are preventing you from activating your power?
Make active, mindful choices. Integrate AI only where it supports your sovereignty.
Ask the hard questions. Demand the answers. We’re not here to survive the AI era. We’re here to define it.
If you’re ready to move out of crisis mode, reset to clarity, and reclaim your cognitive sovereignty, schedule a discovery call. Let’s talk about how I can support you through humn-to-human mindset coaching.
